ISOLA

by Allegra Goodman

It had been a while since I started a book knowing almost nothing about it, and I had forgotten what a joyful and emotional ride that can be. Isola was on my list because of Reece Witherspoon’s book club, and it became available from my library just as I left on a trip with my husband without our kids. I always find I enjoy a book more when I can devour it in long sittings, and that’s exactly what I did.

Isola is a gorgeous fictional account, based on a few true historical footnotes, of a young girl in 16th century France and her struggle for survival. She begins her life as the wealthy daughter to noble parents, but as one tragedy after another befalls her, her position and livelihood become more precarious. With no personal autonomy, she is at the mercy of her guardian who gambles multiple fortunes, including hers, on his exploratory journeys to New France, now Canada. Eventually, the girl herself is forced to board a ship for the New World, and that is only the beginning of her harrowing story.

In addition to creating this fascinating historical plot, Goodman manages to conjure vivid and surprising characters. The girl’s personal growth from pampered courtier to rugged survivor is epic, and yet a believable coming-of-age journey to which I could strongly relate. Her beloved nurse is one of the most heartbreaking mother-figures I have ever read, and the guardian one of the most twisted and disturbing patriarchs.

As you loyal L&L readers know, historical fiction is my first love, and Isola is one of the best of that genre that I have read in years. This will make a great read for the upcoming cozy season, so grab it now! (Lily)
